Canon update!
Right, so what's happening is this: Loki had, up until now, been from during the time before the events of the movie in an AU way; Thor was with him. Now however...
Loki, while exploring random worlds, stumbled across the Chitauri, or their representative. They offer him power, and the Earth- in exchange for his cooperation with their plans.
Now, by this point Thor has been starting to get through to him, even if Loki is reluctant to admit this, or apologise or anything. But it's a start. So what does Loki do?
Accept. But thing is, he does this without telling Thor, because if Thor knew, he'd follow and get in the way - and, knowing Thor, make a mess of things. So, importantly, it's also to -protect- Thor.
Events of the Avengers movie continue more or less as canon. Last thing Loki is going to be remembering from the update is the moment on the roof of Stark Tower and he's looking out at the hell he's unleashed, and Thor is asking him to stop, and come home.
I am a mean, mean mun. And I know it.
